3kms up the road lies the famous Abbaye Royale at Nieul sur L'Autize Certainly worth a visit. All of the exhibits have english translations. This was the home of Eleonor d'Aquitaine, mother of Richard the Lionheart. Also just 8kms away lies the Marais Poitevin with its 12th century abbey ruins at Maillezais It is a great area to see by bike as it is quite flat. Just 50kms is la rochelle and 60kms Les Sables d'Olonne where you will think you have taken a wrong turn and arrived in the South of France! Not to be missed is the Puy du Fou (70 kms) which will entertain adults and children alike and if you are lucky enough to secure tickets for he devening spectacle "Cinescenie" boy are you in for a treat! Not to be missed also is Futuroscope. Further afield being 1 hour approximately by car but again a good day out for the whole famile.
